How to Choose a Smart Lock

No more hidden keys — if you pick the right one. A locksmith's guide to fit, backups, security grade, connectivity, and the features worth paying for.

A good smart lock means no more hidden keys and no more lockouts — but a bad one means dead batteries and a door that won't open. Here's how to choose one that actually makes your life easier.

1. Make sure it fits your door

Most smart locks are built for a standard deadbolt cutout, but door thickness and backset vary. Check the manufacturer's fit guide, or have a locksmith confirm compatibility before you buy — a return is a hassle a five-minute check avoids.

2. Insist on a backup way in

This is the one people regret skipping. Look for a lock with a physical key override or, on keyless models, an emergency power option (some let you touch a 9-volt battery to terminals to wake a dead lock). Never rely on batteries alone with no fallback.

3. Check the security grade, not just the "smart"

Smart features don't equal strong hardware. Look for an ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 or 2 rating, which measures real-world durability and force resistance. A flimsy lock with a great app is still a flimsy lock.

4. Pick the right connectivity

  • Bluetooth — works from your phone nearby; simple, no hub, but no remote access.
  • Wi-Fi — control and check it from anywhere; uses more battery.
  • Z-Wave / Zigbee — great if you have a smart-home hub and want everything integrated.

5. Choose the features you'll actually use

  • Keypad — give guests, cleaners, or kids a code instead of a key.
  • Auto-lock — locks itself after a set time so you never leave it unlocked.
  • Guest / temporary codes — perfect for rentals and deliveries.
  • Fingerprint — fast, keyless entry without remembering a code.
Battery life matters. Look for low-battery alerts and plan to change batteries before they die. A lock that warns you early is worth more than one extra feature.

6. Get it installed right

A smart lock that's misaligned will grind, drain batteries, and fail to latch. Proper alignment of the bolt and strike is what makes the difference between a lock you love and one you fight with. A locksmith can recommend a model that fits your door and install it so it works smoothly from day one.
